Luther's Language(s): A Workshop on Martin Luther's Linguistic Legacy

On Friday, October 27, UChicago Presents, with generous support from the von Humboldt Performance Fund and the Division of the Humanities, will present the world premiere of OpenEndedGroup’s BlackLetter in the Performance Hall of the Logan Center for the Arts. 

To mark this world premiere, the Parrhesia Program for Public Discourse and the Department of Germanic Studies are co-hosting a workshop on Martin Luther’s Language(s) on Friday afternoon, October 27th featuring a distinguished roster of scholars who will explore the ambivalent legacies of Luther’s linguistic politics, which are central to the concerns explored in BlackLetter.

The October 27 workshop will take place from 3pm to 5pm in the Performance Penthouse of the Logan Center for the Arts and will feature: 

Barbara Natalie Nagel, Associate Professor of German at Princeton University. 

Christine Helmer, Professor of German and Religious Studies at Northwestern University

Ella Wilhelm, Humanities Teaching Fellow in Germanic Studies at the University of Chicago.

Following the premiere of BlackLetter (along with two additional world premiere works by composer Tom Chiu and choreographer Jodi Melnick), David Levin, Alice H. and Stanley G. Harris Jr. Distinguished Service Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies, Germanic Studies, and Cinema and Media Studies, will moderate a post-show conversation with the artists along with Tina Post, Assistant Professor of English, Theater & Performance Studies, and Creative Writing at the University of Chicago, and Seth Brodsky, Associate Professor of Music and Director of the Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry at the University of Chicago.
