Study Abroad

• Western Civilization in Vienna 
  Students in Chicago's autumn-quarter Vienna Program study the history of Central Europe in one of its chief capitals, a city of extraordinary beauty and cultural richness. The three-course " Vienna in Western Civilization" sequence is compressed into the ten weeks of autumn quarter and taught in English. • Many undergraduate students have completed BA Research through the Vienna Human Rights program.
   
• University-based Program in Berlin 
  The University of Chicago Berlin Program provides students in the College with an opportunity to study for a German semester or an academic year in the exciting capital of a reunited Germany. The Program is operated by the Berlin Consortium for German Studies (BCGS), an association of six American universities (comprised of Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania, and Princeton). It is based at the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin, a pre-eminent German university located in Dahlem, a villa district in southwest Berlin. Program participants also have access to courses at other major Berlin institutions including Humboldt University and the Technical University. Chicago students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Berlin Program for the full academic year, but have the option to participate for two quarters (Autumn-Winter or Winter-Spring) instead.

• Foreign Language Acquisition Grant (FLAG)
  The Foreign Language Acquisition Grant (FLAG) Program offers a significant number of awards ($5,000 each) to College students to defray the costs of intermediate or advanced language study abroad. Study programs must be at least eight weeks in duration and located in a setting where the target language is predominantly spoken. Applicants must have completed or tested out of the 103 level of the target language by the program start date. If you are interested in applying for a FLAG grant, please contact director of the German language program, Maeve Hooper, by mid-January.
   
• Third-year majors can apply for a Romberg Summer Research Grant to do preparatory work for the BA paper. Send your application, a two-page single-spaced description of your research project and a budget description, to the Director of Undergraduate Studies by March 1.
   
• DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Programs
  • DAAD German Studies Research Grant: Supports third- or fourth-year students seeking a 1-2 month research experience in Germany
  • DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE): Offers a stipend of 650 Euros per month for up to three months to conduct research in Germany over the summer
  • DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship (Supports second- and third-year students who wish to study and conduct research in Germany for 4 to 10 months)
  • DAAD University Summer Course Grant (Summer courses at German universities to help build your language skills while studying anything from film to politics to engineering)
  • UA7 Study & Internship Program (SIP) in Germany (Provides support for study at a German university, followed by an internship (including applied science research)
